On Sept 28th, the Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America hosted a root beer float celebration and ribbon cutting of the new Community Outdoor Classroom at the Lyle Crovisier Memorial Park at the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes. The pollinator garden is open to the public and a place for people to walk on the path, learn about pollinators and enjoy the beautiful flowers and pollinators. Grand awarders and supporters from the community spoke including: Jackie Buboltz, DL Chamber President and DL Park Board member Amanda Quam, West Central Initiative Grants Administrator Shanna Rix-Bach- Pelican River Watershed District Anna Schmitz, DL Community Foundation and DL Noon Rotary Sany Gunderson for Bill Henke, Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America Master Scout Lance Akers Troop 674 And the introduction of the Eagle Scout who led this project, Peyton Malecka, and his family. A special Monarch Presentation was given by area volunteer Mari Bell. Local kids were encouraged to metamorphosis into Monarch butterflies, sporting colorful wings and delighting guests. The garden will be at the Boys and Girls Club. The Izaak Walton League of America- Prairie Woods Chapter is working with him to help his dream come true. 6-23-25 - Sheila Johnston, otherwise known as the Loon Lady, talks with us about an organization she started, MN Loon Rescue. She and other volunteers save loons that are in distress from being tangled in fishing line or have swallowed lead fishing tackle.
